Software Asset Management (SAM) FAQs
Q I have deployed an audit tool on my network, isn't that
enough?
A No, gaining and maintaining up to date information on your
installed software (and hardware) assets is important but only
one part of a proper software asset management culture.
Q Will adopting SAM make me immune from organisations like
the BSA and the major Vendors?
A Any organisation that adopts SAM will have nothing to worry
about if requests for information about their licence positions
are ever raised. The facets of SAM will enable the organisation
to prove its ownership and management of its software estate.
Q Exactly how will adopting SAM save my company money?
A There are many ways that tangible financial benefits can be
enjoyed including procurement, support/upgrade/ maintenance
charges, faster time to deploy, reduced hardware charges and
many others that will depend on each adopter's starting position.
Q My company recently bought a corporate licence agreement
for a major vendors product set - therefore my licence position
is clear, right?
A Not necessarily. Many companies that have these agreements have not examined their underlying licence position and therefore
the corporate licence they purchase does not solve their licence
requirement.
Q SAM is just another name for an audit isn't it?
A No. Software asset management has a far reaching and ongoing
raft of benefits associated with it. The old style audit was
really only to give a snap shot in time and often the data was
allowed to go out of date very quickly and so all the time and
effort was wasted.
Q So, how much could I save by investing in SAM?
A Again, it depends on your starting position but savings of
over $200 per PC have been reported.
Q Isn't SAM just another industry fad?
A Definitely not. Most of the world's major vendors are now
putting in place schemes to help their customers achieve SAM.
In addition, the ITIL 'Best practice for SAM guideline' has
been published and forms a vital part of this world class approach
to IT service management.
Q Can SAM become part of my company's overall quality standard?
A Yes, and in addition the BS15000 has been created to align
with ITIL and is compliant with the ISO9001:2000 quality standard.
